Can we transcend AI tools?

In David Lynch’s Dune movie (1984), the Weirding Module is a sonic beam weapon. It translates certain specific sounds into attacks of varying potency. These devices are not present in the original novels by Frank Herbert.

There is a quote “Usul no longer needs the weirding module” from David Lynch’s adaptation of “Dune.” It’s a metaphor that resonates with our journey of learning and mastery. Particularly in the context of utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT. We transition from reliance on external aids to the development of internal mastery. A path that mirrors our human learning processes.

ChatGPT taught us how to write complex Midjourney image prompts. We then no longer needed ChatGPT. We did it ourselves on the fly.

AI doesn’t always speed up or shortens the production process for writing a novel. Faster production isn’t always true. AI reduces cognitive load and mental stress generating the raw material or storytelling. But the amount of time editing and refining may be the same. AI content that’s not adjusted by a human is stiff and verbose. It feels cheap.

We can overcome writer’s block induced by staring at a blank page. AI helps us overcome inertia — and begin a task.

When writing AI image prompts, tools like ChatGPT may act as our “weirding module.” It’s an external device that enhances our abilities. It guides us through unfamiliar territory. The weirding module in “Dune” provided a technological advantage. AI offers a scaffolding for our initial learning.

Humans are capable of applying knowledge through apperception. It is the mental process of making sense of an idea by assimilating it to the body of ideas we already own. In other words, if you know how to ride a bicycle you may learn how to ride a motorcycle with less effort.

As we interact more with AI, we begin a process akin to apperception. We integrate new information and skills into our existing framework of knowledge. Over time, what was once a task reliant on AI becomes more intuitive. We absorb patterns, and structures, and gain insights. We absorb a deepening of skill and understanding. This then translates to our external AI tool becoming less critical. We “no longer need the weirding module.” Our dependence diminishes.

This highlights the remarkable adaptability and growth of human learners. We transition from assisted learning to independent application and innovation. This showcases the unique human capacities for creativity, insight, and intuition.

This journey reflects not only a learning process. It demonstrates our ability to grow, adapt, and transcend the tools we use. Usul’s transcendence of the weirding module symbolizes our journey toward self-reliance. It is the realization of our inner potential.

AI becomes a stepping stone to a new way to learn. A testament to the enduring power and adaptability of the human spirit.

AI is powerless without you.
